NAHB announces most popular new-home features for 2014
Are you looking to purchase a new house this year? As you're likely aware, there are a number of advantages to owning a home, including increased financial independence and security. However, if you choose to buy a newly-constructed property, you could benefit from the presence of modern features and amenities that older houses might not be outfitted with.
Due to the fact that April is recognized as New Homes Month nationwide, the National Association of Home Builders compiled a list of the year's most popular aspects of new single-family homes.
Ample storage, energy-efficiency top NAHB's list
After surveying residential construction professionals across the country regarding the features that they were most likely to include in a typical residence in 2014, NAHB officials found that convenience, energy-efficiency and livability were among the top priorities.
In the vein of providing homebuyers with amenities that are as practical as they are functional, homebuilders who responded to the recent poll noted that a walk-in closet in the master bedroom and low-emissivity windows were the most popular features added to new houses this year. Rounding out the top four were a designated laundry room and a great room that can be utilized for a range of activities.
"Newly constructed homes can suit the specific requirements of today's home buyers," said Kevin Kelly, chairman of the NAHB. "And now is a great time to consider buying a new home, as consumers can take advantage of competitive home prices and low interest rates to find the perfect new home for their families."
Builders also noted that features such as a front porch, nine-foot ceilings, a patio and stylish outdoor lighting are highly-requested this year, according to the survey. Additionally, they reported that amenities like a central island, granite countertops and a double sink were popular upgrades to kitchens, while bathrooms increasingly saw the inclusion of linen closets and a private toilet.
Low-e windows could prove beneficial this season
While many individuals may be looking to purchase a new home in the coming months, those who buy houses with energy-efficient implements may stand to benefit more.
According to the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy, residential energy use has increased steadily over the past 25 years, and homes use nearly 25 percent of all the energy consumed in the nation. With costs and usage expected to rise over the next quarter-century, houses that afford owners the opportunity to save money may be a good investment.
